A Remarkable First Season: Alan Turton’s Year as President of the Leicestershire & Rutland Golf Union
October 22, 2025
Earlier this year, our Managing Director, Alan Turton, was appointed President of the Leicestershire & Rutland Golf Union (L&RGU) — a proud moment for both Alan and everyone here at Rowley Turton.
Now that the 2025 golf season has drawn to a close, it’s fair to say that Alan’s first year as President has been nothing short of remarkable. Under his presidency, Leicestershire & Rutland have enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in their 99-year history.
Historic County Championship Victory
In July, the Leicestershire & Rutland team won the England Golf Midland Regional 6-Man Qualifying Event at Droitwich Golf Club in Worcestershire. It was the first time since 2013 that the County had qualified for the National Finals – and only the tenth time overall.
At the National Finals, held at St Enodoc Golf Club in Cornwall, the team faced formidable opponents from Lancashire, Kent, and Gloucestershire – all much larger counties with a history of success at this level. Despite being the smallest Union in the event, with just 26 member clubs, Leicestershire & Rutland’s determination and team spirit shone through.
Affectionately nicknamed “Dad’s Army” due to their average age of over 30 (and unlike their opponents, almost all of whom were full-time amateur players), the team defied expectations.
After a battling start against Gloucestershire – including one player forced to withdraw through illness – the team rallied to claim a 5–4 victory. Wins against Kent (6–3) and then Lancashire (5–4) followed, completing a clean sweep and earning Leicestershire & Rutland their first ever County Championship title.
England Golf President Alastair Booth, himself a lifelong Leicester City supporter, presented the trophy to County Captain Richard Wale (Kibworth GC), noting the fitting achievement of a historic first title by such a dedicated and experienced team.
A Year of Success Across All Levels
Alan’s presidential year has coincided with an extraordinary run of results across all L&RGU teams:
- Under-18s – Winners of the Junior Anglian League
- Seniors – Winners of the Midland Golf Union East Midland Senior League (for only the second time)
- Seniors – Winners of the East vs West Midlands playoff for the first time
- 1st Team – Winners of the Anglian League with a 100% record
- 2nd Team – Winners of the Second Team Anglian League, also with a 100% record
100% winning records are rare in the Anglian League – for both the first and second teams to achieve this in the same year is possibly unique.
Proudly Supporting Alan
Everyone at Rowley Turton has been immensely proud to see Alan represent Leicestershire & Rutland so successfully in his first season as President. It’s been an inspiring year, marked by teamwork, dedication, and local sporting excellence – values that reflect both Alan’s approach to leadership and our firm’s ethos as a whole.
We wish Alan and the Union continued success for the 2026 season.
